ABOUT the ARTIST

Emerald McColey is a 27-year-old Irish Mexican-American multi-disciplinary artist currently in Monterey Bay, located on the California coast. Since graduating from California State University, Monterey Bay in 2020, Emerald has poured herself into visual public arts in efforts to foster accessibility in communities of Monterey County.

Artistic roots set in at a young age with poetry, sketching, painting, pastels, and nail polish. Related to the San Francisco based artist Josh "Yoda" Vasquez, she aspires to do art despite adversity as a foster youth. Read about her in this article issued by The Magazine of CSU Monterey Bay. Throughout her academic career, she sustained a talent for music playing multiple percussion instruments, flute, bass guitar, and, self-taught, guitar. Performing in some of the most memorable ensembles in the Central Valley and Central Coast such as the Merced Marching 100 and CSUMB's Sharp Nine.

What remains a stain on a page ultimately is a means of catharsis, visions, and episodes in her life. Her dynamic abilities offer narrative to what is typically unheard of for a former foster youth. In addition to her paintings, she explores different media such as drawing, sculpture, performance and video/photography.

Emerald has since recovered from medical hurdles and is working towards exhibiting her pieces throughout the Bay Area.
